CUSTOM HELMETS
Mark really enjoys painting helmets because of the techniques involved with painting a round, and sometimes, challenging surface with tricky air vents and mouldings. Nowadays, the helmet custom painting scene even at MotoGP level has had to become faster, with a lot of the top riders' designers integrating their airbrush with digital design and printing. This decreases the turnaround time of a helmet being customized, as special water decal graphics are used for logos, letters and even photographic prints. In contrast, all of Mark's designs are fully painted, meaning, *NO STICKERS*! Almost like what one would call 'old school' these days, where the finished helmet is a piece of artwork created solely by the artist using the same tools that were used before the digital age: an airbrush, masking and a good scalpel! |
Just some of the many steps taken while creating Gino Rea's helmet.
